   Wildflower Survey May 15, 2005

We had 10 on our survey crew, thanks everyone who volunteered!  Some of the seeds had germinated and flowered, but many were waiting for the next few weeks, so we can consider the project a success.  Several property owners have volunteered to send in reports on their properties, so we will keep you all updated on what is coming up when and where.

Maple Tree Festival - October 17, 2004

The Maple Tree Festival, sponsored by Pima County Board of Supervisor Ray Carroll, was held in Summerhaven at the old Alpine Lodge site, the landmark building destroyed in the Aspen Fire over one year earlier.  Plans for new construction of buildings for the village were unveiled, and in spite of a chilled windy day, people enjoyed great barbeque, beer, wine, soft drinks and a raffle.  Music by the Desert Cadillacs was provided for dancing and entertainment.  Proceeds of over $2,000 benefitted Trees for Mt. Lemmon.

ASPEN TREE COLLECTION - Nov 13, 2004

Trees for Mt Lemmon and the US Forest Service assisted in an aspen tree root and shoot harvest. The trees that were planted last year have done very well in their new locations. Aspen trees are colonizers that naturally expand into sunny areas after forest fires.

Property owners met at 9 AM on Saturday, November 13, across from the public restrooms in Summerhaven. Steve Hensel provided information on where to dig up aspen tree roots and how to plant them. In preparation for the event, people were instructed to locate and dig an 18 inch deep hole for each tree on their property in a sunny spot and to bring a sharp shovel and plastic bags for the collection of root balls. Volunteers were also needed for those property owners who were not able to participate in the harvest. Residents were asked to sign up on the volunteer page of the www.treesformtlemmon.net website.

Aspen Tree Collection - Saturday November 17th, 2007
The day dawned chilly but beautiful, as several dozen cabin/property owners gathered at the parking lot across from the MLCC to learn how to harvest aspen shoots for transplanting.  Steve Hensel, USFS, once again instructed everyone how to dig carefully, to transport and care for the now-dormant plants.  The harvest site at the top of the mountain near the parking lot by the radar station provided excellent aspen specimens, and soon plastic bags, boxes and vehicles were loaded, and happy residents were off to plant their new trees.  With the ensuing rains and snowfall, hopefully the efforts will be realized in the spring.  Many thanks to Steve Hensel for providing this opportunity again.

Aspen Tree Collection - Saturday, November 21st, 2009
Again this fall, Steve Hensel, USFS,  met with an enthusiastic group of Mt. Lemmon property owners who were interested in harvesting aspen shoots for transplanting to their properties.   Trees for Mt. Lemmon has arranged for this annual event for the past five years, and this year's project was well-received and successful.  Now, with the trees planted and enjoying some much needed snow this winter, they should do well.  Please let us know how your efforts have paid off!  Thank you, Steve, for once again giving of your time and expertise.

Aspen Tree Collection - Saturday, November 13th, 2010
Our yearly aspen harvest began with Steve Hensel of the USFS instructing the group of over 20 happy people, including some new folks, on how to be successful with their efforts.  Using very sharp digging instruments, carefully wrapping the root balls in plastic, keeping intact as much dirt as possible with the roots, and planting quickly; these helpful suggestions made the day go smoothly and successfully.  Many people were able to maneuver some very tall specimens to their vehicles, and it is hopeful they will all survive.  Lack of precipitation this winter makes it imperative that transplants receive some extra water during the spring and summer seasons until the monsoon arrives.  Steve, again many thanks for making this annual project so worthwhile and fun!  We look forward to hearing more success stories, and perhaps you have some pictures to add to the website.   Just let us know.

HALLOWEEN CELEBRATION  2007
A wonderful family Halloween Celebration was held Sunday, October 28th, 2007, at the Mt. Lemmon Fire Department.  The afternoon festivities included hayrides, delicious chili/hotdogs with all the trimmings, and prizes for the outstanding costumes seen on young and old!  Trees for Mt. Lemmon sponsored the Pumpkin Patch this year, and all the kids got to choose their own pumpkins from a real honest-to-goodness patch down behind the fire station.  Carving stations were set up complete with decorations for the children to use, and prizes were awarded for every ghoulish creation.  The beautiful fall afternoon and mountain fellowship was enjoyed by all.
